NAIROBI (Sputnik) — Liberia has become a new member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), adding to the number of least developed countries that have joined the organization.

The decision on the country's accession was made by WTO members in October. Liberia is the eighth country on the WTO's list of least developed states to join the organization since 1995.

"It is a historic day for Liberia, but it is also a historic day for the WTO. In welcoming Liberia, we bring the new least developed country to the organization. I have no doubt that Liberia will make a good use of the platform that the WTO provides," WTO Director General Roberto Azevedo said on Wednesday, at a ceremony to mark Liberia’s accession.

Azevedo expressed hope for Liberia’s active participation in all aspects of the WTO.

The accession ceremony took place in Kenya's capital of Nairobi, where economy ministers from over 160 states are currently participating in the four-day 10th Ministerial Conference of the WTO, aimed at defining the course of multilateral trade relations for the coming years.
